Blue moon is een manifestatie die zich zomer 2001 in de stad Groningen afspeelt op het snijpunt van openbare ruimte/kunst/theater/muziek/architectuur. Doel is het onder de aandacht brengen van een nieuw stuk stad op het terrein van de voormalige energie-centrale, een gebied zo groot als de binnenstad, een gebied dat niemand kent. In zijn masterplan verbindt Toyo Ito dit gebied met zes plekken in de binnenstad, vanuit de overtuiging dat een ieder ‘witte plekken’ in zijn mental map heeft. Ik schets de toekomst van een gebied onder nadrukkelijke gebruikmaking van de huidige toestand van dat gebied. Er hoeft geen beeld bedacht te worden – de benodigde beelden zijn er al – ze hoeven alleen nog maar ter plekke gevonden te worden.

The 2001 Blue moon summer manifestation in the city of Groningen (the Netherlands) was a cultural project, which was intended to balance at the intersection of public space, art, theatre, music and architecture. The objective was to bring it to people’s attention that the city of Groningen had gained a whole new urban area on the site of its former power plant, an area as large as the city centre and at the time a terra incognita to most city inhabitants. In the master plan he was invited to design, the Japanese guest architect Toyo Ito connects this area to six spots in the city centre, based on the belief that every one of us has ‘white spots’ in his mental map. I myself attempted to sketch the future of an area specifically using its current state in the process. There proved to be no need to think up or stage images – the necessary material was already all there – it only had to be discovered on site.
