not non-made booklet for the night

Ofwel: een niet níet gemaakt boekje voor de nacht. Een boekje waar niemand op zit te wachten maar dat toch gemaakt moest worden! Ik zag het Groninger Museum in aanbouw als een opgraving en bracht drie nachten in de bouwput door. De gedachten over en voor dit boekje worden meegenomen in het definitieve product dat een dubbel verhaal vertelt: de bouw van een museum én het ontstaan van een boekje over die bouw. Daarmee tracht ik binnen beeld te brengen wat er altijd buiten blijft – de alternatieven, de twijfels onderweg, de schetsen, de contactvellen, de ozalids – het uiteindelijke boekje is onaf, niet alleen in de keuze van typografie, beeld en materiaal, maar ook omdat de lezer moet handelen vóór hij/zij van de inhoud kan kennisnemen. A booklet no one was waiting for but still had to be made!

The thoughts on and for this booklet are included in the final product which tells a double story: the building process of a museum and the development of a booklet about that process. Thus I try to highlight what normally stays uncovered – the list of alternative options, the doubts along the way, the sketches, the contact sheets, the ozalids. The final book is incomplete, not only in the choice of typography, image and material, but also in the way it is presented to the reader, who intentionally has to undertake certain actions before he or she can take knowledge of the book’s content. Because, you see, this booklet has to be literally cut open like old uncut books. It comes with an attached knife. So a lot has to be done instead of it all ‘being’ finished …
