a neon installation

Ik zie deze neon als een teken gericht op de wijdere omgeving: het is een stedelijk element in een suburbane context om aan te geven dat er meer is dan het centrum van de stad alleen. Daarom staat ’ie bovenop de flat.

De rode contour is de eigenlijke naam van de flat: de buitencontour van de letters zijn in deze opvatting synoniem aan het ‘flatlichaam’. De binnen-contouren van de letters zijn als de ramen in het flatgebouw: ze gaan, net als de lampen achter die ramen, in de loop van elke avond één voor één aan en gaan later op de avond ook één voor één weer uit. De punt op de i gedraagt zich als de planetoïde waar het metaal zijn naam aan te danken heeft.

Ik heb dit ‘ding’ een eigen leven mee willen geven: het is steeds anders zoals de flat dat ook is – je merkt het eigenlijk niet, zoals we ook niet gewend zijn om zo naar een flat of onze omgeving te kijken – we doen net of alles steeds hetzelfde is maar dat is niet zo.

I designed this neon installation as a beacon geared towards the surrounding city areas: an urban element in a suburban context, illustrating the fact that there’s more to a city than its inner centre alone. That’s why I situated it on top of an apartment building.

The red outline is the actual name of this apartment building: seen in this light, the outer contour of the letters are synonymous with the ‘apartment building’s body’. The inner contour of the letters correspond to the apartment building’s windows: one at a time they light up during the evening, just like the lamps behind the building’s windows, and later on at night they also both extinguish one by one. The dot on the ‘i’ refers to the asteroid from which the metal takes its name.

I aimed to give this ‘thing’ a life of its own: it constantly changes just like the apartment building does – hardly anyone ever notices it, as we are not used to observe an apartment building or in general our environment in that manner – we just pretend nothing ever changes which obviously isn’t true.
