Dick Maan (†) is oprichter van de Emmaplein Foundation, een stichting die vele culturele initiatieven financieel steunt. Molen De Valk in Haren werd met geld van de stichting gerestaureerd en in die molen staat dit monumentje. Wat blijft is deze molen, dankzij de gift van het door Dick Maan ingestelde fonds; Wat blijft is de herinnering aan Dick Maan, door het behoud van deze molen (en door alle andere doelen die door de Emmaplein Foundation worden gesteund en mede mogelijk gemaakt). Ik wilde de negen letters van deze woorden achteloos, terloops, tegen de muur zetten, zoals een molenaar zaken die niet meer bruikbaar zijn wegzet: omdat ze ooit nog van pas kunnen komen. Ze zouden stof verzamelen en onderdeel worden van het interieur. Maar het leek me lastig voor de gebruiker van deze ruimte, die losse letters, die ook nog eens in een bepaalde volgorde moeten blijven staan. Daarom besloot ik de woorden uit planken te snijden en die planken achteloos, terzijde, tegen de muur te zetten. Dick Maan (†) is the founder of the Emmaplein Foundation, a foundation that financially supports a great number of cultural initiatives. The ‘De Valk’ (‘The Falcon’) mill in the small town of Haren (near the city of Groningen in the Netherlands), restored with funds provided by this foundation, harbours this modest monument. What remains is this mill, thanks to the support of the foundation founded by Dick Maan; what remains is the remembrance of Dick Maan, due to the preservation of this mill (and all the other causes supported and funded by the Emmaplein Foundation). My idea was to place the nine letters of the Dutch title of this art work (‘Wat Blijft’) carelessly, casually, somewhere against the mill walls, like a miller stores the things he considers no longer useful: because one day they might come in handy. They would collect dust and become part of the interior. But I decided it would be inconvenient for the user of this space, these single letters, which also had to remain in a certain order. So I decided to cut the words out of shelves and subsequently scatter them randomly against the walls. Now it conveys even better what this art work is about: what remains is that something’s gone …
